Designing Setup Validation to Build Trust in Wi-Fi Motion Sensing

Home Aware uses Wi-Fi sensing to detect motion, turning ordinary signals into a smart, hardware-free home security system.
I led the end-to-end UX design for a new Setup Validation feature — enabling users to confirm motion detection immediately after setup.
This improvement replaced uncertainty with confidence and reduced support dependency.

Turn Uncertainty into Confidence

After setup, users had no clear way to verify if motion detection was active.
I designed a guided Setup Validation flow that walks users through testing in real time — providing instant visual feedback and immediate confidence that their system is working.

Making System Confirmation Immediate

Before

Users previously landed on a static dashboard with no confirmation that motion detection was active. By embedding an immediate “Test Your Setup” step after onboarding, I made system validation visible and actionable — giving users trust from the very first interaction.

Guided Motion Confirmation That Builds Trust

Before

Each room now has its own guided motion test.
Users can trigger a detection event, see visual confirmation, and instantly verify functionality — turning setup into a confident, feedback-driven experience.

New feature, new lessons

Designing for trust goes beyond visual polish — it’s about creating clarity, control, and timely feedback. This project taught me that every signal of confirmation builds emotional reliability. In connected systems, feedback is trust.

So what changed?

1

Users could now instantly confirm system activity after setup.

2

The guided flow created immediate, trust-building feedback loops.

3

The new validation step was expected to reduce setup-related support tickets and improve perceived reliability across households.
